The ability to have your message be heard is almost more valuable than having a message to hear. When it comes to any business, marketing is the name of the game. My industry is nearly 5 years behind the technology curve and many companies in it are now just realizing the benefits of the internet.

Unfortunately there are no outlines laid out for advertising on the web, and most people in this industry don't even know where to start. Is there any general process to find out where your target demographic is "hanging out" on the internet?

The only way to direct traffic is to be where people are driving to... any best practices for pushing traffic to an event other than just "spraying and praying" ?

This is such a broad question and it certainly is daunting to figure out how to get started and spray and pray is probably not the best approach. One suggestion is to join organizations like Sirius Decisions, or Marketing Profs to get guidance. There are probably others out there but I know we use Sirius quite a lot. I have had really good information from Marketing Profs also. You might want to consider hiring a consultant to help you get started or someone right out of college who studied marketing and leadgen very recently.
