I read an interesting article about how forcing your PC to pull another pointless all-nighter isn't just polluting, it's also a waste of money.

Did you realize that nearly half of all corporate computers in the United States don't get turned off at night, costing U.S. businesses $1.72 billion in annual energy costs and spewing 14.4 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere?  And that 40-60% of IT costs are from computers that are left running 24/7? Geez...those numbers are staggering!

I know I'm guilty of not turning off my machine each evening.  I figured I would give it a rest each Friday night and over the weekend.

I suspect I'm not alone in this routine and hoping after reading this article we'll make a difference by shutting down our 'constant work-companions' each night -- give 'em a rest , save money and our environment.

How often does your 'constant work-companion' pull an all nighter?

I'm pretty good about turning off the lil' devil but overall, unless absolutely necessary, I'm doing better at not turning it on at all when I get home. Sure ASAP projects come up all the time but keepin it off is working for me and to your point, saving my company $$ as well.

So totally true!

I often end up restarting my computer in the morning anyway because everything just runs slow after it's been up all night. Thanks for the article - I knew it was bad, but had no idea it's costing us so much! I also am starting to get in the habbit of unpluging household and office apliances because they suck up power even if they have been powered off. Unfortunately many are not designed to be easily unplugged and require annoying restarting and reprogramming when powered back on.

All righ, gotta go. Time to unplug the laptop!
