Greetings from Diane Davidson, WebEx's Community Director. I love film and probably I'll use some film analogies from time to time as I offer my thoughts on communities and their impact on business today. My blog will not only visit communities but all things social media and how that affects marketing, support, our day to day lives, and anything else that comes to mind.

Two weeks ago I blogged about the ‘Twitter Mandate’. I closed that blog by mentioning that those who know me well know that I will most likely revisit the topic in a short while and be totally 'sold'.  That statement was truer than I thought.  To my total surprise – both professionally and personally, Twitter has delighted me over the last two weeks.  Professionally, I find it a great way to keep up with social media, what’s going on, studi ...     Read entire post

Late last night I received an email from my boss regarding that bleeding edge Web 2.0 Social Media phenomena – Twitter.  Email said something like “let’s get to know each other better so let’s twitter”.  I’m actually watering this down a bit.  I had an immediate reaction – and not the best kind.  I struggle with Twitter.  And when I try to figure out why, it's really around 2 issues – the importance of what I have to say an ...     Read entire post

Brent Leary does it again.  Just read one of his recent blogs entitled Four Good Minutes with David Meerman Scott.  What a great read and a great listen.  If you’re a marketer in today’s world, this delivers quick insight into a strategy to position yourself as a thought leader, as someone with your finger on the pulse of what’s going on.  You just might want to embrace this technique for your company or your personal business.   Take a few mi ...     Read entire post

Eric Chabrow’s recent article “Most Employers Resist Telecommuting” is an interesting and thought provoking read. ‘According to CIO Insight Research's Mobility Survey, 51 percent of CIOs and other senior IT leaders surveyed said their companies discourage fulltime telecommuting. An equal number of the 237 respondents—24 percent each—said their firms encourage fulltime telecommuting or remain neutral’ The article focuses on Telecommuting as a full-tim ...     Read entire post

As many of us were, I was stunned and terribly saddened by the passing of Tim Russert last Friday.  After my son went off to college and I was living alone, I simply loved my Sunday mornings with my pot of tea and “Meet the Press”.  I was raised in a family where dinner was a time for all of us to eat together, to listen to Walter Cronkite and to discuss politics and the economy.  Since my dad worked for National Association of Manufacturers as an tax lobbyist, he was ...     Read entire post

It’s official – according to AAA, the price of gasoline is over $4 almost everywhere – and rising.  I re-watched “Three Days of the Condor” last week during the Sidney Pollack tribute.  Solid film (Pollack/Redford worked together 7 times) made in 1975, just after the first oil crisis (1973).  Although the film can be interpreted as about the CIA and the tactics they use, in today’s environment of fuel and food shortages it is difficult to watch ...     Read entire post

A couple weeks ago,  I attended the Online Community Business Forum in Santa Fe, NM, a fabulous invitation only event that yielded many insights for me.  Among those was the evolution of ‘monologue to dialogue’.   This continues to be a tough concept for many old world marketing and support execs but my belief is that the net result for companies, employees, customers, and prospects is ‘all good’.  Further, and more importantly, we simply are not ...     Read entire post

“The Right Stuff” is a super film that documents the evolution of the space race.  I love this film – the characters are wonderful, all the more so because they were real people.  The challenges were totally amazing.  The fortitude, courage, and sheer determination required to accomplish the goal of getting into space was intense, absolute, and unyielding.  If you know anything about how the film was made, it is even more interesting.  Many of t ...     Read entire post

Recently, my little film group watched “Lion in Winter” and “Becket”, neither of which I had watched for some time.  Both star Peter O’Toole.  The first was simply wonderful – very sharp dialogue, no glitz, a story of 12th century family dysfunction.  Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn simply shine in this movie.  Additionally you’ll get a chance to see the very young Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton before each ...     Read entire post

Oscar season has come and gone.  I’m a TCM addict and simply love their 31 days of Oscars.  Used in conjunction with a TiVo or DVR, 31 Days of Oscars is a simple, fast, foolproof way to revisit films I haven’t seen for years, or see award winners that I have never seen.  It’s a 21st century joy - to be sure.   So I like both “Grand Prix” and “Winning” – neither of which could be made today, “Grand Prix” especi ...     Read entire post
