Thursday, June 19th is 'Dump the Pump' Day!! Remember the "Spare the Air" days with free transit? Well, about a year ago, the free transit no longer existed. The state now has enough funds for one more free transit day and they randomly chose June 19th! So, all you greenies (or wannabe greenies) , please take advantage of free transit if you need to be out and about on Thursday. More than 100 transit agencies have joined Dump the Pump Day by offering ...

One Small Step for TV?

OK, no steps today, no admonitions about taking steps, but one big step forward (I hope) today.
Planet Green TV, from the Discovery Network, launched today. They have some fun video promos on YouTube.
I'm not sure if they've accounted for the extra TV time (and the resulting power consumption and carbon impact) from people watching, but maybe we'll all be a bit greener and it'll be a bit easier. Something you know I think matters.
I took one step today (OK, two)

You might have guessed by now that I’m a marketing guy here at WebEx. And if you’re reading this, you know that I keep talking about little green steps or something in that category.
So I thought I’d share a very small, but not trivial, green step I took today, just to prove my point a bit that it’s mostly not that hard.
We’re sponsoring a conference next week, and we’ll have someone standing in a demo booth showing off WebEx products. One of the things we w ...

It’s Friday, and I know I can use a bit of humor after a long week (or few weeks for some of us) and hope you can too!
I’ll be the first to admit that I just can’t be perfectly green in everything I do (apologies to everyone who’s more hard-core than I am). But, as I so often write here, taking some steps, and some pretty simple steps at that, is far far better than doing nothing. And we all have our own ways to doing that, and our own little steps that help us contribut ...

Last week was a fun-filled and exciting week and I hope you were able to join us for some of the festivities around Earth Day.
Here at Cisco, we held our very own celebration, where we showed off all of the exciting things we’re doing to work to become a little bit greener ourselves and to help our customers become greener.
You can see that at least one of my colleagues fully embraces (pun intended) the whole idea of employees getting involved in taking care of the earth (thoug ...

Who Wants To Claim Green?

It would be hard to follow the news this week anywhere in the world and not be aware of the controversy and protests surrounding the Olympic Torch Relay.
But in all of the reasons to take a position against holding this year’s summer games in China, one reason – one that I would have expected to be front-and-center – has not surfaced.
More attention than ever is being paid this year to the environmental impact of the Olympic Games, and there are no small number of people read ...

Getting it Wrong/Getting it Right

When you pay as much attention to green markets, green customers, green technology and everything green as I do, you start to see the world through green-colored glasses – that is, it starts to seem like the whole world is green.
It’s not.
But, the evidence is well-established that being green matters, and that your customers really do care that you’re green (or that you’re not).
A few months ago, I commented on the Forrester survey, which showed how much green pre ...

It’s that time of year again…I mean for all of us to make those dreaded new year’s resolutions. I’d be willing to bet that for most of you that includes things like losing weight, eating well, spending more time with your family, improving your finances, etc. All of which are great resolutions (and I won’t make any judgments about the likelihood you’ll keep them!).
But what about being a little greener? Are you doing anything to reduce your impact on the e ...

Trim tabs, winglets and web meetings: One of these things is more like the others than I thought

My first-ever management training course was led by a woman from a firm called Trim Tab Communications. Her first question was whether anyone in the room knew what a trim tab is. Among a bunch of high-tech neophyte managers, not one of us did. Assuming you aren’t in the shipping business (or weren’t a model boat builder) here’s a simple description: On many large ships, water pressure requires too much force to turn the rudder to change the ship’s direction. So, there&rsq ...

According to a recent Forrester Survey (survey press release, ZDNet Blog post), about 12% of Americans are what they called “Bright Green” consumers – defined as those consumer who “are concerned about the environment and strongly agree that they would pay more for consumer electronics products that save energy or come from a company that is environmentally responsible.”
“A company that is environmentally responsible….” is the phrase that catches ...
