I provide hard-skill application training almost exclusively, and every single application I tech is web-based. Up until now I have been using application share to share my browser so as to control more fully what people are seeing. I typically provide a demonstration that has limited interaction (maybe pass control around a little and some exercises to fill in on the workbook) and then provide the URL for the app in chat and set the users to completing a few tasks on their own.

I've been experimenting the last few days though with Web content sharing, which allows the user more free reign and opportunity to explore the applications more fully. I finding I can still maintain control by having a separate text file of the URLs I need available to quickly cut and paste URLs to update the dispaly. Whenever I update the URL for the Web content share it snaps all the participants back to my view.

If you are providing hard-skill training on web-based apps how are you tackling it?

I've found that Web content share doesn't work with content on a internal intranet site, is this the same for everyone?

Yes, that may or may not be true, depending on what access the participants have.

Because the Web content share actually opens the page in a browser so that the participants can navigate indepently and experience the live site. Therefor the participants would have to have access to the internal intranet site to be able to see the pages you want to show.

In my case I am almost exclusively showing pages from a secure network, so when I load a page through web content share, if the partcipant has not yet authneticated to the network they will get hit with an authentication screen before the page loads.

The process I have found to be most effective is almost exactly what you have described. I Share Application for the purposes of demonstrating steps that I may have each participant duplicate on his/her own. Then I share web content with the URL for the page I want each participant to navigate independently. If anyone is unable to see the page (which I have found to be uncommon), I too paste the URL into the chat as a work around. Because I cannot see what each person is doing I try to be very clear in my verbal instructions and if I want to see the Meeting Manager view of a learner here is what I do:

1. Pass the presenter ball to the participant.
2. Guide the participant to use Share > Meeting Manager
3. At that point I can see his/her perspective of the Web Content - as well as the rest of the participants.

_____

In instances where I prefer to have a private conversation when coaching a participant I have used Training Center breakout sessions so that I can communicate 1:1 with the attendee and monitor how each person is doing one by one.

Jenny,

We talked before about sharing a Flash file so participants can interact with it independently (eg a captivate simulation where the user has to click along to continue) How do I present the flash file? I tried document share and only the host can click through the file.

My recommendation is to select Share Web Content from the share menu. You can paste the url for the simulation into the pop up that appears and the page will display as a new tab that each attendee can interact with independently.

OK, is there somewhere on my WebEx server that I can place the swf file, and then have a URL to use to access as you described?

Hi Andrew,

I did some testing and found that there is not a place via your WebEx service you can place the file to have a url to utilize during a session. What we do is use a web server to create the link for our simulations.
