09/28/2007 9:24 AM Alert

Hi,

I've searched the forums and haven't found anything regarding a peculiar quirk we've found recently. When connected in a Support Session with some clients running Vista, we are able to control the browser window of the support session but we are not able to control the desktop at all. We can hover over icons adn they will highlight, but we can't click on them. When we try to initiate a file transer, the file transfer window will show the file has been transferred but the file does not show on the client's PC. Even a desktop-to-desktop Drag and Drop will not work (this has been done successfully with clients running Windows XP). I did see Rajiv Saxena's post regarding the June Service Pack, but we are running Windows XP on our PCs and am not sure this will resolve the issue.

Has anyone experienced this or know of a work around?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

I have no answer to your issue, but can add frustration of my own with vista.

some of our  computers with vista freeze the picture during a session, yet the voip is fine. sometimes the vista computers voip will not work at all.

vista is clearly unsable and unexplainable bugged up with webex

Webex told us we have the latest webex version which should work with vista, yet we are loosing our minds.

when we use xp, all is good.

this vista issue is critical. we are loosing customers.

Hi Brian, hi Joshua,

sorry to see that you are having these issues with Vista. I am running Vista next to XP successfuly with WebEx for months now.

Please make sure your WebEx site gets upgraded to the latest version of WebEx, preferebly the version T26. Please contact you Client Success Manager at WebEx for further help. If you do not know you CSM, then please sent me an email to axela@webex.com and I will digg him or her up for you, kind regards Axel Albrecht, Solution Engineer - WebEx

I have this same problem as well. I cannot run any admin/elevated programs (UAC) and am using the newest version of webex via a eval account webex has created for me. APparantly they dont have the problem in houe, but it exists elsewhere in the world...

As far as the eval acct goes, its fine, but does NOT solve the vista problem so i dont know how they dont see it.

a solution is to edit the registry eith a .reg file that disables UAC

then have the customer reboot..or...have kill explorer.exe and winlogon.exe through the taskmgr

that will put the user back on the windows logon screen but not in the session, but, UAC will be disabled
have them relog in and rejoin the session

now if i could only have webex tell me how to add a (rejoin on reboot) registry key myself so i can do all that without having to do a full on rebot to get the customer back into the session

excuse all the typos in that post my keyboard is jacked up

anyway

.reg file with
HKLM \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\System Key EnableLUA D_WORD = 0

then, through a nonelevated taskmanager, kill explorer.exe THEN winlogon.exe

and the problem with WebEx is that its either not running as a system file/program (which it shouldnt be anyways for safety reasons, but for vista it has to to make it and UAC work), or, that it isnt elevating atscmrg.exe upon initial run, which it SHOULD be doing regardless

other than that...webex is a great program no qualms here :)

Hi All,

As you talked about, this issue is related to UAC in Vista. Any time an application is invoked that runs in high IL you will be prompted by UAC. If you choose 'continue' the application will launch and you will be working in the elevated privilege.

WebEx sessions run in medium integrity level. When you are controlling a customers machine and invoke an application that requires high IL, you will be prompted as expected. The difference here is that this new application is running at a higher privilege level than the WebEx session. You will be able to watch what the customer is doing but not be able to interact or control anything until the high IL application has been closed by the customer.

This is a known issue that WebEx is working on. Please contact me for any additional information.

Why cant WebEx recompile atscmgr.exe to run at a High IL, or, as a system process (thus giving it admin/system privilege levels)????

Also, if I use the built-in windows Remote Desktop function, I can see the UAC elevated prompts, click on them, as well as control elevated programs/consoles (i.e. msconfig, defragui, etc...). Maybe WebEx can configure atscmgr.exe to run through winlogon as an admin? Im not sure how it all works 100%

Another note...how does WebEx generate the "Rejoin Session" registry key? How does it find the session and SUpport Rep info, and put it into the registry before rebooting????

We are working on finding the best possible solution to this problem that addresses the usability and security concerns. In the meantime you can still use the annotation tools while viewing an application/desktop that can't be controlled because of this issue.

I apologize for the lateness and thanks to all for your responses. We have been consolidating 2 heldesks and it's been a little rough. I have been in contact with our CSM, Ben, and he confirmed that we are indeed on an older version of the tool. He is not sure why we weren't upgraded, possibly due to a lock, but we are looking into upgrading to the most recent iteration of the tool.

Thanks, again, to all and have a great holiday and New Year!
