Hello,

I am looking for a way to be able to whiteboard using and electronic whiteboard in our classroom and make the results of the drawing available to a live class.  I don't want to have to save and distribute the whiteboard images but would like to have them presented to meeting attendees while I am drawing on a whiteboard in our classroom

Any suggestions on a product to use for this?

Thanks,

Robert

Hi Robert,

Our research has not uncovered any interactive whiteboard vendors that can provide a "live" feed to a computer as you describe. If you or others within the community know of any interactive whiteboards that provide this capability, I would be happy to explore how we can integrate this type of solution into the WebEx environment.

An option you may want to explore is using a graphics tablet (Wacom is a very well known brand.) You could hook the tablet to your PC and display the video output from PC on a large screen monitor. The pen for the graphics tablet acts as a mouse so you could then use the Annotation feature in a WebEx session to write or draw on the tablet. Your drawings/writing would then display on the large screen. You could do this using the Whiteboard feature in a WebEx session or even draw or write on a document or presentation in a WebEx session. You can also save the annotations and share them in a file that you can send to your attendees. And you can save money since interactive whiteboards are much more expensive than graphics tablets.

Hope this helps,

We are just starting to look at shared whiteboarding but so far don't have any practical experience to share.

To me, it seems a matter of thinking through what needs to be achieved and then figuring out the best technology to be used as a "whiteboard". Hadn't thought of graphics tablet, but a plain old PC shared whiteboard application hooked to projectors where needed or document cameras/visualisers (particularly those with a backlight for x-rays etc.) are probably suitable alternatives to traditional whiteboards.

Have had a cursory look at "smart boards" which can be interconnected via separate conferencing software, but haven't been able to get definitive answers on how well this works or how scalable it is.

I use a program called Mimio. It turns any whiteboard into an interactive whiteboard that can be captured into a computer, projected through a video projector etc. The software it comes wiht is a lot betterthan the whiteboard in WebEx. The draw back is that you can not Preent the document within WebEx, you have to actually share the application but it works great. I do dream interprretation training nad use the mimio whiteboard all the time in training. It works by putting regular Expo markers in the Mimio marker holders that allows them to be captured. I got my Mimio on Ebay for a half the price.
