I'm interested to hear what experiences people have of converting WebEx recordings to podcasts which are playable on an iPod or similar device.

I found that exporting to WMV and then into an iPod-suitable format gave poor quality output, so the method I'm currently using is as follows:

1. Download the ARF file.
2. Scale the WebEx player window to 320x240 and use Camstasia to record the screen output.
3. Export this into iPod format.

It's a slow and awkward process, and costly ($299 for Camtasia), but it gives good results. And currently I'm not able to export at 640x480 which would be better for newer iPods.

Is anyone else using this technique or something similar?

Honestly I couldn't even imagine doing this without a middleware like camtasia. I do mostly web-based application training and my presentations would be useless crammed down to 320x240. I'd have to have something like Camtasia's pan&zoom feature to make it anywhere worthwhile.

On a side note, what codec are you using when you convert to WMV? you should have better results with the WM9 screen codec than anything else as it is specifically designed for full-screen capture encoding. Which actuallty now makes me wonder which codec WebEx is using to make the recording in the first place...

Actually, it's the audio that's the main problem, rather than the video. It sounds overly compressed. There doesn't appear to be any control over the codec used.

I would think that you want to convert to .mp4 format. I'm in the process of uploading a presentation that's about an hour and my file size is about 67mb. The quality if decent for playback. I'll post a link to iTunes once it's up.

What method did you use to convert your presentation MP4? And is it playable on an iPod?

This is done with in Camtasia. At least in version 4 and 5.

I'm curious. How long are your podcasts? Our webex recordings are approximately 60 minutes. Do you think that is too long for a podcast? Also wondering then how big the files are? Thank you

The ones we currently have are also around 60 minute, but in future I think around 15 or 20 minutes would be a better length. The raw WebEx recordings are around 40-70MB and I think the converted files in iPod format were around 50MB.
